A Big Littles Mama Hug

While reading blogs, there are times when I have come across a poor mama who is worn out with the toddlers and she'll say something like, "with a 2 year old, and a 4-month old, I am barely keeping up!"  I would snort a little to myself and think, "just wait till you have a few more!  THEN you can be REALLY justified in thinking that life is hard."  Youch.  You would think I could have just a little more sympathy than that, but you know how it is.....we all forget, when we think we will remember everything about raising kids - especially the hard times.

Well.

I remember the hard times now!  On Sunday evenings I am left home alone (eeeeek!) with our littles.  They are 2 years old and 4 months old.  ;-)  I'll tell ya what...I don't know how I got through the older three's preschool years.  These two littles keep me moving and shaking.  I'm used to having First Son, First Daughter and Second Son around to say, "Can you do blah-be-de-blah for me while I do so-and-so?"  Or, "Can you take Third Son outside to play while I fix dinner?"  In other words, I am a spoiled rotten mother of littles.  So to all you moms of littles who have no olders to help you out, GOD BLESS YOU.  From now on, you have ALL my sympathy and if I could reach out to you through the web, a BIG HUG!

Exercise Challenge

Moms of Many Exercise Challenge

De'Etta, you know you're absolutely right about the Leslie Sansone exercise plan being just one workout each day.  I am such an all-or-nothing person that I see three workouts listed, and immediately want to do all three each day.  As my husband would say, "You're a freak of nature, Becca."  In a nice way, of course.  LOL!

ANYWAY.....the new Leslie Sansone video I bought has 5 workouts on it.  I worked my way through those over a week and a half and then rotated back to the Cindy Crawford video I have.  It KILLED me.  And I don't think it's because the Cindy workout is that much harder.....well, I think it is more intense, but I have never been as sore after a workout as I was after that workout on Saturday.  I think it's because I got my muscles out of their groove.  I've heard before that it's good to vary your workout so your muscles don't get used to doing the same ol', same ol' again and again.  I know that before I got the Leslie video that the Cindy workout was feeling very easy to do.  I just about had the moves memorized, and I really felt as if I were starting to breeze through it.  When I worked out with the Cindy video after not using it for a week and a half, it was as if I had never done that workout before.  So now I've decided to alternate the videos every other time, rather than working completely through the video before going back to the other.  I would also like to invest in some other videos to add to the mix.  If anyone has a recommendation, I'm all ears!

I did not start the 10-Day challenge that Leslie has yet.  My youngest two were sick for most of the week, so I felt good to be able to get anything on the table.  Forget some foreign meal plan!  ;-)  I'm planning on getting to it this week.  Can't wait.

I did sneak in two extra workouts this past week.  I added some movement to my kid's school schedules.  One day they take a bike ride together, the next they workout with me using the Leslie Sansone video and the last day they jog around the block.  They are going to build up to a mile of jogging/walking.  The Leslie video that I have has a one-mile beginner's walk.  My 7 and 9 year old were able to easily get through it.  Of course the 12 year old had no problems, either.  I don't get to go on the bike ride since we don't have enough bikes and I have to stay put while the baby sleeps, but I did get to run around the block and of course do the Leslie video....we're all going to get in shape if it kills me.  ;-)

Little Giant Steps

This is a short article written by Jan Bedell of Little Giant Steps.  I have used the neurodevelopmental approach with some of my kid's issues, and have friends who have done the full blown program and we have all ended up with totally different kids when it was all over.  :-)

Where is all that information going that I teach my child each day?

Dominance determines where information is stored in the brain and how it is retrieved.  In order to be neurologically efficient, you must be completely organized on one side of your body - one hemisphere must dominate and coordinate your entire system.  You must be right eared, right eyed, right footed and right handed.  To be right eared does not mean that you have better hearing in your right ear; it means that your right ear directs which hemisphere of the brain the information you receive is stored.

The determination for dominance starts with the hand.  Hand dominance is genetically predetermined and should not be encouraged one way or the other.  It should emerge by the time a child is 3 to 8 years of age.

If your brain is neurologically organized, your dominant ear will file information it receives in your dominant hemisphere, which is where reasoning, analytical and logical thinking take place.  So, when you go to retrieve that information, it is there.  If you are neurologically disorganized (mixed dominant), your sub-dominant ear will file information it receives in your sub-dominant hemisphere, which is where music and emotion take place.  The child with mix dominance issues files the information in the wrong hemisphere and when he tries to retrieve it, this happens: "I know I put that information in a file drawer somewhere but I'm really not sure where and I can't seem to find it right now."  This is extremely frustrating!  When you have a child who is extremely frustrated day after day, you will have a child who has low self-esteem, problems with long and short-term memory, as well as emotional and behavior problems because he is living in the sub-dominant hemisphere of his brain.

Symptoms of mixed dominance include:  long-term memory problems, inability to stay on task, reading difficulties, emotionality, spelling difficulties, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, doesn't test well, and inability to retain information (knows his addition math facts one day but the next day he acts like he's never seen an addition problem in his life!)

Exercise Challenge

Moms of Many Exercise Challenge

So we found a Chick-Fil-A waffle fry in our car, smashed down between the seats.  No telling how long it's been there, and it's still its original golden-yellow color.  No signs of it turning just yet.  We've put it in the cup holder in front to observe it and see if it ever goes bad.  It's too bad I had to come across that YouTube video because it was nice living in ignorance about how bad fast food can really be for us.

In other news....someone who joined the challenge at the beginning mentioned that she works out with Leslie Sansone videos.  I love workout videos because they allow me to workout at any time of day without having to leave the house.  When I was at Target the other day, I browsed the workout videos and came across Leslie Sansone.  I remembered reading about her, the blurb on the videos sounded interesting, so I bought one.  I really like it!  My husband works out with me.  He's not to crazy about her....he says she reminds him of Miss Patty Cake.  Anyone ever see Miss Patty Cake?  I think it's been awhile since he's seen Miss Patty Cake because Leslie Sansone is not anywhere near being as annoying as Miss Patty Cake.  It's actually very hard for anyone to be annoying as Miss Patty Cake.  God bless her.  ANYWAY....It's a nice change of pace from the Cindy Crawford workout I've been doing, and while browsing on her website this weekend, I found a 10-Day Challenge.  Basically, you follow a specific meal plan, workout after each meal so you can work off the meal and after 10 days, you're supposed to be much lighter.  Well, duh!  ;-)  Working out three times a day will tend to do that to a person, ya?  LOL!  Goodness knows I don't have time to workout three times a day, but I am going to follow her meal plan and workout as much as possible.  Can't hurt!

I'm looking forward to hearing from you guys this week!  Sign-in with Mr. Linky and leave a comment so I'll know you've been here.  If this is your first time here, check out the details of the Exercise Challenge HERE.

My Very Own School Schedule

I am trying to become more "on purpose" with keeping up with the kid's school assignments.  For myself.  I always make an effort to read the books they are reading, but don't always succeed.  It's important for me to read what they read because we do oral narrations!

I am also going through Polished Cornerstones and Plants Grown Up with the kids, and there is some good memory work that I feel I should be doing along with them.  Bible verses and catechism stuff.  Am I the only person in the world who used to think that the word "catechism" implied something from the Catholic church?  You'll have to forgive me, I grew up a Southern Baptist.

Anyway, I sat down and made myself a schedule tonight.  First and Only Husband has taken the oldest three camping this weekend, so I've had a few minutes to THINK.  It's been a nice change of pace from the almost-hectic go, go, go of chores, refereeing & etc.

Here's the schedule I made for myself for this coming week:

Well, never mind.  ;-)  I tried to cut and paste it from Word, but it looks freaky when I do so, so you'll have to take my word for it.  But I'm excited about having my own school schedule.  I think it will go a long way in making me feel more ready to face each school day, rather than hurriedly reading through things as I can through the day so I can stay caught up.  I am also a check-off gal.  Having something like this schedule in front of me is going to be a major motivator.

Frugal Fridays

I have always wanted to participate in Frugal Fridays, which Crystal, at Biblical Womanhood hosts every Friday.  But I feel like a frugal-lightweight compared to some of those ladies that usually participate, so I have just been observing from the sidelines until now.  It occurred to me this past weekend, that I finally have something to contribute to the frugal discussion.

We are in the middle of moving the kids from one room to another as we try to squeeze in our new baby girl into a bedroom that is not ours.  God bless her, she's cute and all, but it's time for her to have her own space.  ;-)  We are doing some major overhauls in each bedroom.  New moulding, paint, window blinds.....whatever we can do, we're doing it.  Last Saturday, First and Only Husband and I paid THREE DOLLARS for these blinds at Home Depot...

These blinds cost over 50 bucks each!

A couple of years ago, a friend emailed us about an online gig called MyPoints.  You sign-up, and then begin to receive emails that are basically ads for goods or services.  All you have to do is click on the ad and you will earn five points.  Sometimes there are surveys that can earn you up to 60 points.  After awhile, these points add up and you can cash them in for gift certificates to fun places like Home Depot, Lowes, Starbucks, Old Navy, Target....they've got a huge list to choose from.  My husband and I both signed-up for MyPoints, and we both arrived at the needed points to receive $50 Home Depot gift certificates at the same time.  So with our hundred bucks, we bought these wooden blinds for three!  So far through MyPoints, we have earned a total of $250 in gift cards.  Not too shabby!

If you are interested in MyPoints, please let me know.  I would love for you to sign-up through me so I could earn points for referring you!  Send me an email at and I would consider it a huge favor.  :-)  You'll have to type my email address - my husband made an image of it for me so spammers could not capture it and use it.  How cool is it to be married to a web guy?

I have no words for this

Art major Aliza Shvarts '08 wants to make a statement.

Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself "as often as possible" while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages. Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process.

The goal in creating the art exhibition, Shvarts said, was to spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body. But her project has already provoked more than just debate, inciting, for instance, outcry at a forum for fellow senior art majors held last week. And when told about Shvarts' project, students on both ends of the abortion debate have expressed shock — saying the project does everything from violate moral code to trivialize abortion.

But Shvarts insists her concept was not designed for "shock value."

"I hope it inspires some sort of discourse," Shvarts said. "Sure, some people will be upset with the message and will not agree with it, but it's not the intention of the piece to scandalize anyone."

The "fabricators," or donors, of the sperm were not paid for their services, but Shvarts required them to periodically take tests for sexually transmitted diseases. She said she was not concerned about any medical effects the forced miscarriages may have had on her body. The abortifacient drugs she took were legal and herbal, she said, and she did not feel the need to consult a doctor about her repeated miscarriages.

Shvarts declined to specify the number of sperm donors she used, as well as the number of times she inseminated herself.

Art major Juan Castillo '08 said that although he was intrigued by the creativity and beauty of her senior project, not everyone was as thrilled as he was by the concept and the means by which she attained the result.

"I really loved the idea of this project, but a lot other people didn't," Castillo said. "I think that most people were very resistant to thinking about what the project was really about. [The senior-art-project forum] stopped being a conversation on the work itself."

Although Shvarts said she does not remember the class being quite as hostile as Castillo described, she said she believes it is the nature of her piece to "provoke inquiry."

"I believe strongly that art should be a medium for politics and ideologies, not just a commodity," Shvarts said. "I think that I'm creating a project that lives up to the standard of what art is supposed to be."

The display of Schvarts' project will feature a large cube suspended from the ceiling of a room in the gallery of Green Hall. Schvarts will wrap hundreds of feet of plastic sheeting around this cube; lined between layers of the sheeting will be the blood from Schvarts' self-induced miscarriages mixed with Vaseline in order to prevent the blood from drying and to extend the blood throughout the plastic sheeting.

Schvarts will then project recorded videos onto the four sides of the cube. These videos, captured on a VHS camcorder, will show her experiencing miscarriages in her bathrooom tub, she said. Similar videos will be projected onto the walls of the room.

School of Art lecturer Pia Lindman, Schvarts' senior-project advisor, could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.

Few people outside of Yale's undergraduate art department have heard about Shvarts' exhibition. Members of two campus abortion-activist groups — Choose Life at Yale, a pro-life group, and the Reproductive Rights Action League of Yale, a pro-choice group — said they were not previously aware of Schvarts' project.

Alice Buttrick '10, an officer of RALY, said the group was in no way involved with the art exhibition and had no official opinion on the matter.

Sara Rahman '09 said, in her opinion, Shvarts is abusing her constitutional right to do what she chooses with her body.

"[Shvarts' exhibit] turns what is a serious decision for women into an absurdism," Rahman said. "It discounts the gravity of the situation that is abortion."

CLAY member Jonathan Serrato '09 said he does not think CLAY has an official response to Schvarts' exhibition. But personally, Serrato said he found the concept of the senior art project "surprising" and unethical.

"I feel that she's manipulating life for the benefit of her art, and I definitely don't support it," Serrato said. "I think it's morally wrong."

Shvarts emphasized that she is not ashamed of her exhibition, and she has become increasingly comfortable discussing her miscarriage experiences with her peers.

"It was a private and personal endeavor, but also a transparent one for the most part," Shvarts said. "This isn't something I've been hiding."

The official reception for the Undergraduate Senior Art Show will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on April 25. The exhibition will be on public display from April 22 to May 1. The art exhibition is set to premiere alongside the projects of other art seniors this Tuesday, April 22 at the gallery of Holcombe T. Green Jr. Hall on Chapel Street.

Exercise Challenge

Moms of Many Exercise Challenge Just in case you splurge every now and then on fast food, check out this video.  It will totally gross you out.  Our family doesn't eat at any fast food restaurant but Chick-Fil-A, but I've decided to try the same experiment the woman in the video has done to see if I come up with the same results.  I hope not.  ;-)

Still exercising, although I missed a day due to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.  First and Only Husband's Dallas Stars are in and he wants to watch every minute of every game they're in.  Kinda puts a cramp on my exercise time since I've been doing the workout video thing.  I'll have to get a little more creative with my workouts this week since there will be more games this week than last.

An update on my laundry....I'm just about caught up, and hope to stay caught up.  When I was so behind the kids kept telling me they needed new clothes because they didn't have anything.  HA!  Now their closets are filling up and they feel as if their old clothes are new.  So there ya go...what a cheap way to make my kids feel blessed with new clothes.  ;-)

Visions of Jesus

First and Only Husband went to Krygyzstan back in 2004 for two weeks to teach some computer classes.  While he was there, one of the men in his class told him that 9/11 was a spiritual blessing for Afghanistan.  He said that when the U.S. went into Afghanistan and got rid of the Taliban, there was a freedom in that country that hadn't been felt for years.  With that freedom came God's good news.  Before 9/11, the Christians in that country could have been counted on one hand.  Today, there are thousands of believers in Christ.  It is truly an example of how God can take something that's bad and make good from it.

I came across a recent post (3/23) by Joel Rosenberg on his blog, The Joshua Fund.  He continues with the good news:

The God of the Bible is moving powerfully in the Middle East to draw men, women and children to His heart and adopt them into His family in record numbers. More Muslims have come to faith in Jesus Christ over the last thirty years -- and specifically over the last seven to ten years -- than at any other time in human history. There is a revival going on among the ancient Catholic, Coptic, and Chaldean churches. Today, the Church is being truly resurrected in the lands of its birth.
....
In December 2001, Sheikh Ahmad al Qataani, a leading Saudi cleric, appeared on a live interview on Aljazeera satellite television to confirm that, sure enough, Muslims were turning to Jesus in alarming numbers. "In every hour, 667 Muslims convert to Christianity," Al Qataani warned. "Every day, 16,000 Muslims convert to Christianity. Every year, 6 million Muslims convert to Christianity." Stunned, the interviewer interrupted the cleric. "Hold on! Let me clarify. Do we have six million converting from Islam to Christianity?" Al Qataani repeated his assertion. "Every year," the cleric confirmed, adding, "a tragedy has happened."

One of the most dramatic developments is that many Muslims throughout the Middle East and even in the United States are seeing dreams and visions of Jesus. They are coming into churches explaining that they have already converted and now need a Bible and guidance on how to follow Jesus. This is in fulfillment of Biblical prophecy. The Hebrew Prophet Joel told us that "in the last days, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days....And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved." (Joel 2:28-32)

So KEWL!!!!!!!!!  :-)  God is good.

If you want to get involved in what's going on over in the 10/40 window, a great resource is Praying Through the 100 Cities of the 10/40 Window.  There are daily prayer requests for each of the 100 cities, and I can say from personal knowledge that at least one of the prayer requests has been answered through some of the people my husband met during his trip to Kyrgyzstan.  So my post about that HERE.

Obedience Brings Joy

The past two days with my kids has not been a fun ride.  I don't know what's going on, but they are being so disobedient, disrespectful to me and to each other, not doing their work.....ugh.  It's been a struggle.  I am a happy-go-lucky kinduvagal and constant conflict is hard for me.  So today, while I was sweeping the floor after lunch, I begged God for the kids to find joy in obedience.  And then I begged God to throw me a bone and help me to deal.  That's when He reminded me that *I* am being obedient by sticking with life with the fam and taking the time to disciple the kids out of their issues, so *I* should be feeling the joy!

What a shot in the arm that was.  I felt as if I were walking on clouds the rest of the afternoon.

He tends His flock like a shepherd.
He gathers the lambs in His arms
and carries them close to His heart.
He gently leads those that have young.

Exercise Challenge

Moms of Many Exercise Challenge

This has certainly been the year for adjustments for me.  I am so glad to be exercising again, yet at the same time, I remember now why I haven't exercised in years.  That whole time-thang.  Now I am exercising when I used to do laundry, clean the bathroom & etc.  I've been struggling since we started this challenge at the end of February to work out a decent schedule so I can still get a few things done that are very necessary.  At first I was spinning my wheels, trying to do it all, running around like a crazy woman, only getting a little of this and a little of that done.  First and Only Husband would raise his eyebrows at me every evening as I let the chores take me from one room to another without finishing what I started.  I guess I was in panic mode.  When my brother was here, we were talking about what stresses us.  When he asked what stressed me the most, I said, "Not getting anything done."  Oyve.

So this week, my goal is to get some control over the chaos.  I'm going to approach my chore/school planning issue like I did the exercise.  Start slowly, and very gently add in new things as I develop a routine.  The area that has suffered the most is laundry.  So my goal for this week, along with my exercise, is to fold or iron 30 items each day.  That number may change.  I might increase it if 30 goes by quickly.  We'll see.

Alicia, I hope you are feeling much better!
